Libraries, second hand books shops and my imagination have always been my favourite places to hang out. Books always had and still have top spot on my Christmas List. Christmas and birthdays were the only times I got brand new books. Each year Mum ordered an "Annual" for me...anything from June and School Friend to Princess Tina Ballet Books. Mum ordered comic books for me, along with her magazines and newspapers, so I had plenty to read throughout the year. I did get into trouble for reading them by torch light under the bed covers though. It took dedication to maintain my "bookworm" status.
I think it sad when children say they don't like reading. I am ever hopeful that this state is simply because they haven't found a story they like. It was with these children in mind that I set out to write a book that reluctant readers want to read. ABC Bunyip Saves the Big Black Boogie Swamp has an appealing mix of uniquely Australian elements, familiarity, new ideas and a good splash of naughtiness.
